How to treat Dandruff at home

Dandruff is caused due to excessive dryness of scalp which leads to shedding off dead skin. Dandruff is something that can cause embarrassment along with serious hair and scalp trouble. Black or any dark colour clothing is a complete no-no when you are hit by dandruff trouble. It leaves your scalp dry, itchy and leads to excessive hair fall. A. Neem

It is known for its medicinal benefit and can help in effectively controlling dandruff. It has anti fungal properties which help in reducing falling off the white flakes. You can make a mixture of neem juice along with coconut milk, beetroot juice and coconut oil, massage the same on scalp and wash off after keeping for 30 minutes. Use it once a week for effective result.

B. Baking Soda

It is very beneficial in getting rid of dandruff as due to its alkaline nature it helps in removing dead skin that cause dandruff. It eliminates dryness and helps in curbing oil secretion. It prevents fungi growth that causes dandruff. Make a paste of baking powder with water, apply it on hair for 15 to 20 minutes and wash off with plain water.

C. Vinegar

Vinegar is very effective in controlling dandruff. Apple Cider Vinegar and white Vinegar can be used for treating dandruff. Apple cider Vinegar is known for its anti bacterial and anti fungal properties and its acidic nature helps in maintaining the pH of the scalp and prevents excessive oil secretion. It can be mixed in equal quantity along with water, apply the mixture on scalp and hair, leave for 30 minutes and wash off only with plain water. Avoid using shampoo after treating with apple cider vinegar. It prevents the growth of fungus, yeast and bacterial thus controls dandruff. You can also use white vinegar mixed with water to massage your scalp, leave on for few minutes by wrapping your head with warm towel and rinse off with a very mild shampoo. It can alternatively be used with lemon juice or tea tree oil or banana.

D. Oil

Massaging your head with oil is very important to strengthen your hair root as well as to treat dandruff. It helps in relieving one from excessive scalp drying and thus controls falling of excessive white scalp flakes. Olive oil is very helpful in moisturizing our scalp and with regular olive oil massage you can effectively cure dandruff. Simply warm some oil, massage on scalp, leave for an hour and wash off. Tea tree oil has anti fungal properties which prevents dandruff and also relieves from scalp infection. Add few drops of tea tree oil to regular hair oil, massage, leave overnight and shampoo off.

E. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera can help in reducing dandruff and keeps scalp healthy. It acts as natural moisturizer and also helps in fighting against bacteria. It also relieves you from itching with it anti inflammatory glycoprotein compounds. Aloe Vera contains enzymes which helps in removing the dead skin flakes and prevents dandruff. The best aloe vera for dandruff treatment is natural aloe vera. Extract the gel from aloe vera plant, apply the same on scalp, leave on for 15 to 20 minutes and wash off with plain water. Alternatively, take 2 to 3 spoon of aloe vera juice and add 5 to 6 drops of tea tree oil, massage the same on your head, leave overnight and wash off next morning.

F. Fenugreek

Fenugreek seeds help in strengthening hair, keeps scalp healthy and also cures dandruff. It has anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties which helps in preventing scalp dryness that leads to dandruff. It is rich in proteins and has anti fungal properties as well. It prevents fungal attack of Malassezia furfur fungus which causes dandruff and scalp dryness due to hair follicle bloackage. Soak fenugreek seeds overnight, make a paste by grinding the seeds, apply on scalp and leave for an hour and wash off with water. The fenugreek mixture can also be made with olive oil or coconut oil or apple cider vinegar alternatively, apply on scalp, leave on for an hour and wash off properly. This treatment is used once or twice a week can effectively control dandruff.

G. Lemon

The citrus fruit is a boon when it comes to fighting dandruff as its acidic nature keeps infection at bay and strengthens the hair follicle. It eliminates dead skin on scalp, has anti fungal properties and promotes healthy scalp through its rich properties. It can be used alone or in combination with other oil. Slice raw lemon, apply across the scalp, leave for 30 minutes and wash off with water. Alternatively it can be used in combination with coconut oil or olive oil, massage and keep it for an hour before washing off. A lemon and yoghurt pack is also very effective in controlling dandruff.

H. Reetha

It is very useful in keeping your tresses shiny, beautiful,strong and dandruff free. It has anti bacterial properties which helps in keeping your scalp healthy and eliminates dead skin. It has been used since a long time as hair smoothening and strengthening remedy. Reetha can be mixed with Gooseberry or Amla and Shikakai to prepare shampoo which helps in reducing dandruff. Grind the three of them together into powder form, add 2- 3 cups of water and leave the mixture overnight. Boil the mixture and wash your hair with the cooled strained water to feel the difference. Use the therapy twice a week to see the result.
