Migraine is a severe form of intense headache which is accompanied by other conditions like nausea and vomiting. It is extremely uncomfortable and last for hours with severe headache. Along with headache that is triggered through the entire brain portion, the person also faces sensitivity to sound, light and smell. Migraine is caused due to constriction of the blood vessels resulting from impulses from hyperactive nerve cells and the pain is triggered due to release of inflammatory substances. It is very difficult to treat migraine as the pain is recurrent in a migraine patient but here are few home remedies that can help soothe the pain a little.
A. Ice – It is one of the common and popular remedy for migraine and the cooling effect of the ice helps in reducing the level of pain by creating temporary numbness. Cover the ice cubes with a towel, place it on your head and rub across neck, forehead to get rid of the migraine attack or at least alleviate it.
B. Peppermint – It has cooling effect with its major ingredient as menthol which is known for its strong action against pain and nausea. Peppermint has anti-inflammatory properties which calm nerves and its anti-spasmodic effect reduces excessive contraction of blood vessel. Simple massage your forehead, neck and ear backs with few drops of peppermint oil for soothing effect.
C. Ginger – Ginger is highly effective during migraine attack as its prostaglandin content reduces blood vessel contraction and reduces the release of inflammatory and pain inflicting substances. Make a liquid mixture by boiling finely grated ginger and add little honey and drink it up. Alternatively you can also chew a small piece of raw ginger for migraine relief.
D. Coffee – The rich caffeine content in coffee is found to be beneficial in reducing the pain caused by migraine. Coffee reduces the blood vessel constriction and prevents binding of adenosine to its receptor which is responsible for causing migraine.
E. Massage and Acupuncture – Massage leads to uniform circulation of blood across the head and brain area which relieves vessel constriction. Proper massage on neck, forehead and shoulder area can reduce the level of pain. Acupuncture can also greatly reduce occurrence of migraine in long run.
F. Feverfew – The use of this herb can be dated back in history for treatment of various ailments specially fevers. It reduces inflammation, swelling and soothes nerves. According to Pharmacognosy Review in 2011, it is effective is reducing migraine occurrence and was found to improve migraine conditions in people who consumed it daily.
G. Lavender Oil – It is known for its soothing and refreshing smell and is very effective in treating headaches and migraines. It soothes the nerves and acts as anti-inflammatory agent. Take few drops of the oil, massage it on forehead and back for quick relief from migraine. It can also be inhaled by adding 4 to 5 drops in hot water.
H. Lime Tree – It is a medicinal plant which is known to calm nerves, relieves blood vessel constriction and reduces migraine through its anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used as tea which calm your brain and induces sleep.
Migraines are the most uncomfortable pain and it is important for the patient to fight against it. These home remedies cannot treat it completely but reduce the level of pain and occurrence.
