Sound is simply a vibration. Our ears can comprehend the wave produce by vibration as sound. It is an essential feature of our life which is the means of communication and entertainment in human’s life. A soothing and low sound is pleasant whereas a loud sound is unpleasant and hence referred as Noise. Thus any unpleasant, unwanted sound can be considered as Noise.
Noise is a physical form of pollution, and affect the Living life system directly and/or indirectly. Even though noise pollution is not fatal to human life, yet it cannot be ignored. The source of noise is vast and need to be controlled.
Industrialization-Industries having big machine creates large amount of noises. Mostly the generators, turbines, motors, grinder produces a lot of noise.
Transportation--More number of vehicles in road, Vehicle’s Honk, Aeroplanes flying over, Trains etc. produce heavy noise which is difficult to bear.
Public/Social Events-Marriage, parties, pub, disco or place of worship, people normally break the rules of government administration and create nuisance in the area. Using speakers in public places, social rally, shout of hawkers in market place and public transportation, all these make the respective places very noisy.
Construction Activities-Any form of construction such as buildings, dams, road, fly over stations need some big and large number of machineries, which mostly creates unbearable sounds and noise.
Household Items- Gadgets like T.V, Music system, Mobiles, Mixer grinder, Dryer, Pressure cooker, Vacuum cleaner, washing machine, Cooler, Air Conditioner are less noisy than environmental noise, and still they contribute some part in noise pollution.
Hearing Issues- It includes auditory fatigue and hearing loss which can be temporary or permanent. Where auditory fatigue is the initial and sudden consequences, hearing loss in other hand occurs mostly due to continuous exposure to loud sounds more than 80 decibels at 3000-6000Hz.
Tinnitus-Continuous expose to loud sounds lead to some kind of buzzing and whistling sounds in ears, which can be either temporary or/and permanent referred as Tinnitus.
Cardiovascular issues-Research and various studies have been proven, exposure to loud sounds for a long period may lead to Hypertension, Increased Blood Pressure and High stress level.
Health Issues-Studies say excessive noise pollution near home, office and public places lead to some psychological issues like irritations, stress and aggressive behavior etc.
Sleeping disorders- Loud noise can disturb sleeping pattern which in turns lead to dullness, irritation, uncomfortable situation and directly or indirectly it hampers the day to day performance at home, office and outside as well.
Now, as we know the consequences of noise pollution, we certainly need some way out to get rid of these problems.
Sound proofing the space-You can make your home and work place sound proofing by providing various kind of insulation at wall, sealing, floor along with door and windows, to make a noise free environment.
Use of Ear plugs and Ear Muff: Using ear plugs during night can make you a noise and disturbance free sleep. Even people working at loud and noisy places, like industries can use ear plugs and ear muffs to attenuate the noise sounds.
Regular Hearing Check up: It is necessary to consult an Audiologist and get a hearing check up done in a regular basis to have an eye on your hearing ability.
Less use of noisy machine: Using less noisy equipments can really reduce down the noise pollution. Even we can slow down the music while using headphone, can really take good maintenance of our equipments, so that we can contribute our part in reducing noise pollution.
